Cloud cost optimization for a high-growth digital platform

A structured review of compute, storage, networking and platform usage that reduced monthly infrastructure cost while protecting performance.

Context

A high-growth digital platform was seeing cloud spend climb faster than revenue. Engineering teams shipped quickly, but cost ownership was unclear and there was little visibility into which workloads drove the bill.

Challenge

Infrastructure expenditure was rising month over month. Leadership needed a way to reduce cost without slowing delivery or compromising reliability.

Approach

  • Established a cost baseline across compute, storage, networking and platform services.
  • Identified idle and oversized resources, and reviewed Kubernetes utilization.
  • Reviewed storage lifecycle, data egress, load balancers and NAT gateway usage.
  • Assessed reserved capacity and savings commitment opportunities.
  • Classified each recommendation by financial impact, risk and implementation effort.

Workstreams

Compute rightsizing, Kubernetes utilization, storage lifecycle, network and egress cost, and cost ownership and tagging.

Outcome

Approximately a 15% reduction in monthly infrastructure cost, with a prioritized roadmap for further savings and clearer cost ownership across teams.

Lessons

Sustainable savings come from controls and ownership, not one-off cleanups. Tagging, budgets and regular review keep costs aligned with the business as it grows.
